HR professionals can expect to see themselves in an increasingly high-pressure role over the next decade, as they struggle to meet their organizations’ recruiting demands in the face of a looming skills shortage. Research shows that a skills shortage is already upon us, and all indications are that the problem is going to get worse. Analysts see a variety of reasons for the shortage, ranging from demographic trends, to lack of effective training and apprenticeship programs, to a perceived disinterest of young people in entering the skilled trades. Whatever the cause, almost everyone agrees that the skills shortage is real, and it’s only just begun.
